The Year of The Pig Predictions

The sign of the Dog (combined with fire, yang version) will give place this month to the sign of the Pig (with fire, yin), which is the last of all 12 signs from the Chinese Zodiac. A cycle closes, which began in 1996, with the sign of the Rat. Each sign dominated our planet’s destiny in its turn.

On February 18, the biggest festival on the Chinese calendar will take place: the Chinese New Year. On the eve of that day, on a new moon night, but still very bright and colourful, streets, restaurants, temples and households will vibrate with the arrival, at midnight, of the first day of the first month of the New Year, according to the traditional lunar calendar.
For most Chinese (and Westerners) a new year will then begin, dominated by the Pig. We have to take into account the fact that Chinese astrologers follow a solar calendar corresponding to “fixed” dates in the Gregorian calendar. In fact, the year of the Pig would have begun two weeks earlier, on February 4, the same day when spring, or Li Shu, arrives.
In Western popular astrology, a person’s dominant sign depends on the month he or she is born. Those born between March 21 and April 20 belong to the sign of the Sheep, and so on; but in Chinese astrology, at least in the popular version, the signs are related to the years. The Rat reigned in 1996, from February, followed by the Ox, in 1997, and now the cycle closes in 2007. It is said that people born in a specific year belong to the corresponding astrological sign.
It’s traditional to link each year to the characteristics and symbolism of the ruling sign. It’s no wonder, then, that during their New Year’s speeches, politicians may mention the hope that the Pig’s symbolism is realized during the following 12 months. The sign of the Pig (with a high yin load, corresponding to the end of the day and to winter) is associated with peace and family privacy. When this sign dominates, nations turn to themselves and to their internal problems, and therefore, become less aggressive with other nations.
But astrologers pay more attention to the year’s ruling elements. This year will be a ding-hai year, dominated by the celestial stem ding (fire, or yin) and the earthly branch hai (sign of the Pig, water, or yang and some wood, or yang, in the dawning state). The two most notorious elements of the year will be fire and water, which means that there will be contradiction between the dominating forces, since water dominates fire.
On the other side, it must be borne in mind that each sign corresponds to certain economic activities. Based on that, astrologers and Chinese almanacs usually give general indications as to how those sectors will perform.
Astrologers believe that dominant elements manifest themselves in different parts of the world and in different countries. Besides different factors that have to be taken into account, like feng shui from a specific location and the astrological chart from a certain country, the previously existing situation is also relevant. If a certain sector’s activity in a given country is already high, the ability to rise even further is minimized, while a depressed sector that is eager to recover would welcome a positive pre-disposition.
It’s one thing to have an economic sector favored by the year’s elemental conjuncture. Our ability as individuals or companies to profit from that circumstance is another. Astrologers say that a person with a bad individual horoscope for a determined period of time tends to make the wrong choices, or, if he makes the right choices, he does so at the wrong moment. In other words, any definitive advice must take into account all the astrological and geomantic characteristics of an individual, company or place.
Almanacs analyses for 2007 don’t always coincide, but it’s possible to find common denominators. In my next synthesis, I follow the famous Hong Kong master Raymond Lo, who has a more consistent analysis.
In broad strokes, Raymond Lo, specialist in the dynamics between economic and financial aspects and the five elements, predicts a very active and growth-prone 2007, because of the influence of the fire element, but also a year of illusions (fire, or yin, is compared to the light of a candle). As a result, starting in the Chinese autumn, or from August 8, when the month of the Monkey begins and Fire starts to decay, investors should be careful, “because there will be substantial set backs as the fire element disappears in 2008, the Year of the Earth Rat”.

Predictions for the 12 signs
In the Year of the Pig, the two most prominent signs will be the Snake and the Pig itself. According to the almanacs, people born under these two signs will tend to be noticed and be in the middle of things, in a year rich in changes. The Snake and the Pig, with opposing places in the Zodiac, will create the most stressful axis.
For Snake natives (born in 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977 and 1989, starting from February 4), this year’s challenge is evident. The Pig (water element) opposes the Snake (fire element) and “attacks” her, according to the traditional principle that “water conquers fire.” In the best of circumstances, this will be a year with potential for big changes. Nothing will remain as before.
For Pig natives (born in 1947, 1959, 1971 and 1983, starting from February 4), and despite the fact that this is their year, victory is not guaranteed, since it will only be achieved after facing some turbulence.
Another group of signs is constituted by the Tiger (1938, 1950, 1962, 1974 and 1986), the Rabbit (1939, 1951, 1963, 1975 and 1987) and the Goat (1943, 1955, 1967 and 1979). Those born under the sign of the Tiger benefit from the best relationship with this year’s sign and, according to astrologers, 2007 should be beneficial when it comes to partnerships in all aspects of life.
On the other hand, the Rabbit and the Goat belong to the same family as the Pig, so 2007 should make them feel at home. They may not experience amazing news, but all the essentials should be guaranteed and progress will dominate their year.
The following group of signs is particularly inclined to the enchantments of love, although some other aspects may not be as successful. In a decreasing order of importance, we have the Dragon (1940, 1952, 1964, 1976 and 1988), the Dog (1946, 1958, 1970, 1982 and 1994) and the Rat (1936, 1948, 1960, 1972 and 1984). Their capacity to establish constructive and creative relationships with other people may well be the key to solving problems in other aspects of their lives. The Dragon will clearly be lucky, while the Rat should only have a good year regarding short-term relationships.
For the remaining four signs, 2007 reserves different fates.
Various almanacs consider 2007 to be lucky for the Ox (1937, 1949, 1961, 1973 and 1985), as he will have a year marked by traveling. Not only there will be traveling, but life will also improve because of traveling.
Those born under the sign of the Horse (1942, 1954, 1966, a978 and 1990) are set to have a stable year, not necessarily exciting, and will be able to attract help from other people.
The “Achilles heel” of Monkey natives (1944, 1956, 1968 and 1980) will be their difficulty in establishing relationships with other people. Many problems may arise from conflicts, but many more may be avoided by having a serene attitude.
Finally, the Rooster (1945, 1957, 1969 and 1981) is one of the signs for which traveling may bring a change in luck. Their year’s pre-disposition is for stability. Sometimes, too much stability and e traveling, or any other type of movement and change, will bring some fresh air.

What the elements tell us

Earth
Relates to agriculture, real estate, construction, natural resources and insurance. Professionals such as lawmakers, judges and brokers. For the earth element, water from the Pig means money (since earth “conquers” water – conquering what’s valuable). This means that these professional sectors tend to be valorized, given that their element “conquers” one of this year’s elements.

Fire
Relates to computers, electronics, entertainment, restaurants and the energy sector and activities such as the performing arts, services and promotions.
Situated in the celestial stem, this element tends to be quite visible, attracting attention and, therefore, competition. But that is not enough, since productivity is missing, that is, the earth, the element generated by fire, as well as financial value, or metal, the element “conquered” by fire.

Water
Relates to communication, tourism and transportation, and areas of activity like academia or journalism which are based on the ability to communicate.
Located in the “earthly branch” of the year, this element is strong in 2007, but that isn’t necessarily good news. For all things depending on water, the fact that the same element appears in the year’s conjuncture may signify the presence of other people (or entities) wanting the same thing. That is, competition.

Wood
Relates to fashion, furniture, education and publishing, or professions that have something to do with the passing of seasons, that is, cyclical changes. A typical example would be fashion. An astrologer I contacted also included gambling and casinos under the influence of wood.
According to astrologers, these sectors will be particularly dynamic in 2007 (wood gives birth to fire, which is one of the year’s dominant elements). Still, the ability to generate profit will be comparatively impaired, given the absence of earth (wood “conquers” earth).

Metal
Relates to computers, hi tech industry, automobile manufacturing and jewelry, or activities based on decision making and planning.
Metal gives birth to water, which is present in 2007, signifying increased productivity in metal-related activities and sectors. At the same time, the occult presence of some wood in the Pig (2007) brings the chance for financial improvement (metal “conquers wood).
